Mexico City is one of the most enjoyable destinations. HERE ARE A FEW PLACES WE LOVE or have been dying to try IN THE CITY.
THINGS TO DO
Teotihuacán
About 25 miles outside of Mexico City you'll find this Aztec holy site with climbable pyramids--some of the best preserved Mesoamerican ruins in the country. If you have time, definitely worth the trip! The Uber there is very affordable. Suggest arriving early to beat crowds. More Info
National Museum of Anthropology
The National Museum of Anthropology is a national museum of Mexico. It is the largest and most visited museum in Mexico. www.mna.inah.gob.mx
The Palace of the Fine Arts
Beautiful architecture. Cultural center in the hub of CDMX. MAP
Chapultepec Castle
Located in the heart of Mexico City, Chapultepec Castle is a historic site and local landmark. Inhabited since the days of the Aztec Empire, Chapultepec Hill offers a commanding view of the city. The fortress was the home of legendary Mexican leaders including Emperor Maximilian and Porfirio Diaz and played an important role in the Mexican-American War. Today, the castle is home to the National Museum of History. The views of the city can't be beat! www.mnh.inah.gob.mx/
Zócalo
The Zócalo is the common name of the main square in central Mexico City. Prior to the colonial period, it was the main ceremonial center in the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan. MAP
Tamayo Museum
Museo Rufino Tamayo is a public contemporary art museum located in Mexico City's Chapultepec Park, that produces innovative international contemporary art exhibitions. www.museotamayo.org/
Parque Mexico
Lovely park in the heart of Condesa, surrounded by two ring roads full of great shops and food. Worth an early morning walk. (Fun Fact: we took some of our engagement photos here!) More info
Frida Kahlo Museum
Frida Kahlo's childhood home, and the home that she later shared with husband Diego Rivera. A must-see, and we would recommend pairing this with a visit to the heart of the Coyoacan neighborhood (just a quick walk from the museum). Advance tickets necessary . www.museofridakahlo.org/
Casa Estudio Luis Barragán
Former home and studio of Mexico's most famous architect, Casa Luis Barragan offers a fascinating peek into Barragan's life. Visits by guided tour only (in English), and advance reservations required. www.casaluisbarragan.org/
Casa Gilardi
Minimalist architect Luis Barragan-designed house with private tours by the family that owns it. (Fun fact: we also took some of our engagement photos here!) www.casagilardi.mx/
Casa Prieto Lopez Luis Barragan
Another architectural beauty by Luis Barragan. Stop by Tetetlan for eats while you’re there. www.tetetlan.com/
Soumaya Museum
Futuristic building home to the art collection of Carlos Slim. Museo Soumaya is right across the street from Museo Jumex, so consider seeing both and tying that in with some shopping and walking around Polanco. MAP.
Xochimilco
We'll be taking you out to the Floating Gardens of Xochimilco the day after the wedding, but if you're unable to make it, be sure to add this to your list for another day! More info
Mercados (Markets)
There are so many markets to explore: Mercado de San Juan (international cuisine), Mercado Medellin (food and fresh flowers), La Ciudadela (artisan handcrafts and local goods), and Coyoacan Market (handcrafts and great food). These can be easier to navigate with a guide, but don't be afraid to dive in (and haggle for best prices!).
